what is coaching

If you are new to coaching, you may wonder what the difference is between mentoring and coaching. A mentor is usually someone more experienced or skilled in an area providing knowledge and guidance to support a mentee. A coach helps coachees reflect on themselves, their situation, and context, and identify insights and actions to unlock potential, improve performance, and enhance well-being.

While I mentor many others, in my coaching sessions, I usually call out when I am advising versus when I am coaching you.

As David Rock in his book Quiet Leadership pointed out, transformational and long-lasting impact comes from guiding people to think differently, rather than telling them what to do. “If people are being paid to think, isn’t it time the business world found out what the thing doing the work, the brain, is all about?”.  

​

Rooted in brain-based approaches and neuroscience, I work with individuals toward their personal objectives. Please understand that not all objectives will be met during a single coaching session. Here are some possible objectives for a coaching session: 

​

  • Building the client’s awareness to make better, conscious choices leading towards achieving their goals 

  • Individuals develop their critical thinking capacity, enabling them to solve problems for themselves and not be dependent on their boss for answers, resulting in faster resolution and greater accountability 

  • Individuals are more motivated to execute ideas that they have generated for themselves 

  • Individuals feel seen and heard, allowing for deeper, more authentic conversations about what’s really going on 

  • Ultimately more engagement, empowerment, collaboration, and improved performance across the organization

  • Hold the client accountable for commitment to action

Coaching Topic 

 

You’ll hear me saying, bring a Topic. A coaching topic is something personal or professional that is current, unresolved, and important to the client. Other words for “Topic” include: 

​

  • Issue: “My company is going through a transition” or “I am going through a life transition” 

  • Challenge: “There is so much uncertainty, I am having a hard time focusing” 

  • Vision: “I want to develop a vision for myself or my team” 

  • Goal: “I want to have the best possible outcomes through this transition” 

 

Other example topics include: 

  • Managing transition 

  • Leading change 

  • A challenging relationship/interaction that is going on in your work environment that you want to improve or enhance  

  • A difficult conversation that needs to happen 

  • Developing members of your team 

  • Innovation or new ways of solving a problem 

  • Managing up 

  • More productive meetings 

  • Giving presentations 

  • Retirement 

  • Personal challenge/goal
